Rocio del Mar - Socorro
Liveaboard At A Glance
The Rocio del Mar is a 30 metre owner operated vessel that has been designed specifically for scuba diving. Launched in 2008, the ship has modern, comfortable and well equipped accommodation for 20 passengers in 10 guest staterooms. The vessel has been designed very much with comfort in mind. The large 580 HP engines are highly efficient and operate with low levels of noise and vibration, while the deep V-shape of the hull enables Rocio del Mar to cleave through the sea with the minimum of surface movement. The spacious dining area is situated in the lower forward part of the boat to minimize any sense of movement during meals and on the top deck is a large sundeck with a barbecue where guests can relax between dives. The Rocio del Mar operates a schedule of departures to Socorro from November through to the end of May and for the rest of the year in the Sea of Cortez.
There are eight guest staterooms on the main deck, six with twin beds and two with a double bed. The two staterooms on the interval deck are behind the bridge and have the same facilities but with a double size lower bed and a single bed overhead. All staterooms have private bathrooms, air conditioning and large windows.
Aft of the main deck is a spacious gear storage area with stairs leading down to the dive platform on the lower deck.
The kitchen, large dining room and seating area are in the forward section of the lower deck while on the stern, divers can either enter directly into the water from the dive platform or board the skiffs to visit dive sites further afield.
An interval chill zone has been thoughtfully provided on the second deck with comfortable seating and tables.
For photographers, there is a camera table on the dive deck. In the engine room are two 580 HP engines, two 250 Kw generators and two compressors.
The large upper sundeck provides an excellent area where guests can relax between and after dives and also enjoy a barbecue.
Zodiacs and kayaks are available for both diving and recreational purposes.
At the rear of the main deck is a large dive area, with ample room to kit up and also to prepare camera equipment. There is a wet gear storage area to hang equipment between dives.
All diving is conducted from two zodiacs and divers are split into two groups of 10 divers, led by experienced divemasters. Typically, 3-4 dives per day are offered but this can vary on days when land excursions are planned.
All divers are provided with ‘Nautilus Life line’ personal GPS and 2 way radio devices to clip onto their BCDs.
Due to their isolation, the Socorro Islands are a magnet for marine life that swarm around the rocky walls and slopes. There are schooling reef fish, jacks and marlin, and many species of sharks, plus the playful Pacific manta rays and visiting humpback whales. The underwater terrain is generally rocky and rugged, with little in the way of corals and sponges, but the sheer wealth of marine life and deep clear water makes this a terrific dive destination.
