Liveaboard At A Glance
The Golden Dawn is an owner operated, 24 metre liveaboard accommodating just 10 guests in 5 air-conditioned cabins. She is an attractive and comfortable ship offering a very flexible and adventurous programme.
Golden Dawn runs a diverse schedule of sailings to some of the most remote reefs of PNG, taking advantage of the best weather conditions in different regions. She dives as far North as the Hermit and Niningo Islands where incredible reef formations, huge schools of mobula rays, snapper, jacks and grey reef sharks can be found, and as far South as Milne Bay for the "muck" diving and wrecks such as the B17 Bomber Blackjack, together with the wonderful coral formations of Deacon's Reef. In between are the reefs and wrecks of New Ireland and Madang.
On the main deck there are two air conditioned cabins, both of which have either double or twin beds and a large picture window with a view across the ocean. The other three cabins, one double and two twins, are located on the lower deck. These cabins share two bathrooms but there is a washbasin in each cabin.
The galley and sociable dining room/saloon are on the main deck, while on the top deck is the bridge, the Master`s cabin and a partially covered area where guests can sunbathe and relax.
Diving may take place from the main vessel or from the two rigid hull inflatables that operate as tenders.
Golden Dawn is one of the few liveaboards offering Technical diving courses and support in Papua New Guinea. They are an IANTD training facility and offer EANx diver, Intro rebreather and full Rebreather diver certification, using Drager Atlantis 1 rebreather units. Please ask our sales staff for details and prices for courses and rental equipment.
Because Papua New Guinea is such a large country and Golden Dawn offers such a range of itineraries, the diving is very varied. Eastern Fields, a submerged atoll covering some 400 square miles, is a reef system located 90 nautical miles south west of Port Moresby in the northern reaches of the Coral Sea. Cyclones rarely pass this way so the coral is in pristine condition and the currents attract many pelagic species, such as yellowfin and bluefin tuna, spiralling shoals of jackfish as well as grey reef and silver tip shark. This is open ocean diving, so if you are prone to seasickness, you may prefer the Milne Bay or Madang options.
Milne Bay offers a variety of current and "muck" diving and the opportunity to see giant mantas coming into the cleaning stations. When in northern PNG, trips run from Madang and Wewak, where guests can enjoy superb coral reef diving and coastal wreck diving on a number of Japanese WW11 merchant ships.
Schedule & Itinerary
Generally, from November through to December and April through to May, Golden Dawn operates out of Port Moresby cruising to the Eastern Fields and Portlock Reefs in the Coral Sea.
During March, June and October, Golden Dawn goes in search of mantas in southern Milne Bay area and in June through to September she goes to Madang and Wewak in northern PNG to dive the WWII wrecks and explore the dives and islands of the Bismarck Sea.
All her departures vary in duration from nine to 14 nights, please ask our sales staff for further details.
