Sepilok Nature Resort
Island At A Glance
Borneo has vast expanses of tropical rainforest, home to a staggering variety of wildlife and we highly recommend that you extend your dive trip and incorporate a jungle experience by staying at the Sepilok Nature Reserve in Sabah.
Sepilok Nature Reserve is just 25 minutes drive from the east-coast town of Sandakan. Situated amid beautiful tropical plants, huge trees and spectacular orchids, the resort offers all the comforts and amenities needed after a day spent trekking in the rainforest. The timber chalets have en-suite bathrooms with hot and cold water, shower and bathtub. Meals are served in the central building under covered terraces overlooking a very picturesque lake. A typical stop-over here will include a guided night forest trek and a daytime visit to see the feeding of the orang utans at the Sepilok Orang-Utan Rehabilitation Sanctuary.
The Sepilok Orang-Utan Rehabilitation Centre was founded in 1964 and is a sanctuary for orphaned orang-utans. Over 43 sq km of jungle has been designated as a forest reserve and to date over 200 orang-utans have been successfully rehabilitated back into the wild.
Restaurants & Bars
The restaurant is located in the main building and is built with an attractive traditional wooden interior which offers beautiful views of the rainforest and lake. Guests can enjoy local and western cuisines cooked by the resorts experienced chef.
Sepilok Nature Resort is within walking distance of the world-famous Sepilok Orang-Utan Rehabilitation Centre where young captive, injured or orphaned Orang-Utans are rehabilitated and helped to re-adjust to life in the wild.
A series of boardwalks through the beautiful virgin rainforest lead visitors from the Visitor Centre into the forest to the feeding platforms where, each day, the park rangers make their way with buckets of fruit and milk. The orang-utans are fed twice daily as a supplement to what they can find for themselves in the jungle. Macaques and gibbons may also join the feeding, and you can see other wildlife such as flying squirrels around the centre.
The resort can also organise night jungle walks, bird watching, trekking and river trips to the neighbouring areas, including Kinabatangan River to see families of proboscis monkeys, macaques, gibbons, leaf monkeys, crocodiles and the vast bird life.
A stay at Sepilok Nature Reserve is best combined with a stay at either Mabul SMART Divers Resort or Kapalai Dive Resort. These resorts have access to some amazing and varied diving to perfectly compliment your jungle wildlife experience at Sepilok. Please take a look at our Mabul and Kapalai sections for more information on these wonderful resorts.
