Island At A Glance
Nestled on the site of an old coconut plantation on the east side of north Sulawesi, Kungkungan Bay resort was the pioneer of "muck" diving in the Lembeh Strait.
Today, Kungkungan Bay Resort offers wonderful diving and comfortable accommodation with 16 rooms in four categories and one Owner`s Suite. All the rooms but one are beach front and within easy walking distance of the huge jetty and swimming pool. The overwater restaurant and bar is the social hub of the resort with stunning views across the Lembeh Strait.
KBR has its own house reef for exclusive use of the resort guests where pygmy seahorses are sometimes found. With its location in the centre of the Lembeh Strait, divers have access to a range of superb dive sites offering the best macro diving in the world.
Restaurants & Bars
The overwater restaurant in the octagonal main building has both indoor and outdoor seating and stunning views over the bay. The cuisine is international and the restaurant is open for meals 24 hours a day.
Each evening in the restaurant there is a culinary tour of Indonesia, when the chefs prepare a meal from a different part of the country to be chosen from the "specials" board. A poolside barbecue is sometimes organised and often includes cocktails, music, singing and dancing.
Captain Billy's Bar has a wide range of drinks, both alcoholic and soft and also serves a variety of bar food, snacks and nibbles. The two large multipurpose flat screen TVs show films, sporting events and underwater HD videos or slide shows taken by the dive guides.
This is a essentially a resort for divers and as such the facilities are geared accordingly. However, there is a large infinity swimming pool with beautiful views over the strait and around the pool there is plenty of space to relax in a chair under a parasol. In the evening the pool is atmospherically lit and weekend barbecues are often arranged.
The Tepi Laut Spa which overlooks the swimming pool offers massage and beauty therapies to help you relax and rejuvenate.
There is a variety of land tours to jungle and city for anyone wishing to enjoy the wildlife and culture of North Sulawesi.
The Lembeh Strait is an extraordinary channel of water just over one mile wide and 13 miles long, with mainland Sulawesi on one side and Lembeh Island on the other. It is a shallow mix of black volcanic sand, mud and shale where nutrient rich waters flow through the channel bringing food for the most amazing array of invertebrate and fish populations. This is not a destination where you will see big pelagics species but it is an area where you can spend fascinating hours discovering a truly incredible diversity of macro marine species.
The dive centre offers a full range of PADI courses, from Open Water to Divemaster and Instructor as well as the usual PADI specialty courses. The dive staff are keen photographers so well able to offer advice and guidance on how to make the most of the amazing photo opportunities of the region.
Diving starts from the resort`s huge private jetty with travel to the dive sites on KBR`s covered fiberglass chase boats. Experienced dive staff ensure that your cameras are carefully handled and all dives start with a thorough dive briefing. Close to the jetty is the dedicated photographic room with plenty of recharging points and space for camera maintenance.
