Liveaboard At A Glance
Operated by Avi Klapfer and Yosy Naaman, Sea Hunter is one of the Undersea Hunter fleet. She is a spacious and well-designed dive vessel and has become established in the industry as a leader of dive liveaboards. This robust ship is built for long range expeditions and she accommodates twenty passengers in ten double cabins.
Unique in marine tourism, Sea Hunter usually carries a submersible craft called "DeepSee" that takes one or two passengers - it has a maximum operating depth of 475 metres!
Sea Hunter operates a year round schedule, visiting Cocos Island on ten and twelve day trips. Guests join the boat at Puntarenas in Costa Rica and there is a 32 hour crossing to reach the island. Once there, the diving is amazing and it`s definitely worth the trip!
Sea Hunter`s main accommodation is on the lower deck where she has five twin cabins and three double cabins with a twin option. They are air conditioned and have a small porthole and the ensuite bathrooms have 110v outlets and good showers.
Cabins 1,2,3 and 6 - have two single bunk style beds.
Cabin 5 - has two single beds.
Cabins 4,7 and 8 - have a queen size bed and an optional upper single bunk.
The remaining accommodation, suites 9 and 10, are more specious and located on the upper deck with large windows and a small study area. Additional facilities include a flat scene TV with DVD player, satellite communications,
On the main deck are the dining room and saloon which are spacious and comfortable. In the dining area guests are seated in tables of four and meals are served as a buffet and are plentiful. The large saloon has a flat screen TV, DVD player and a small selection of videos and games. Guests are invited to bring along their favourites. There is a refrigerator that is constantly stocked with soft drinks, ice and beer which are complimentary. Forward of the saloon is a small separate study area and library with a TV, DVD and personal computer available for guests to edit their photographs and videos.
The vast 300 square metre upper deck is used for sunbathing and quiet relaxation and barbecues are also prepared and served here. Its large open area has been specifically designed for landing a helicopter during special expeditions!
Sea Hunter is a superbly well-managed ship with excellent facilities and service. We have an established relationship with this vessel and it is one of our favourite liveaboards.
The large dive deck is situated aft on the main deck. Divers are allocated a station with ample underseat storage for their dive gear. Close to the kitting up area is a camera storage area and a large work bench with 110v and 220v recharging points. There are personal camera cubby holes for each diver, again with recharging outlets.
Diving takes place from the large fiberglass skiffs on which dive sets remain during the diving, which reduces the wear and tear on equipment. The tanks are filled in place as soon as the skiffs return to the main vessel, which means that they are always ready if a sudden opportunity arises, such as the appearance of a bait ball or a whale sighting. These skiffs are very stable, an important quality in these remote and exposed waters.
A programme of four dives a day is usual, with two dives scheduled for the morning (8am and 11am), a third dive after lunch (2.30pm) and either a last dive in the late afternoon or a night dive (after 6pm). All dives are preceded with a thorough briefing and a Divemaster accompanies each group.
Nitrox fills are free and unlimited aboard Sea Hunter and if you are not yet a certified Nitrox diver, you can complete the course during the 36 hour cruise to Cocos. Other PADI courses available are the Deep Diver and Night Diver specialties.
Sea Hunter is fully equipped with Nitrox gas blending systems, partial pressure and membrane compressors and offers full rebreather support, including Trimix with helium and an assortment of bailout and rebreather cylinders. Please ask our sales staff for prices.
Schedule & Itinerary
The Sea Hunter operates a year round schedule of mainly 10 and 12 day trips from Puntarenas to Cocos Island. On arrival at the port town of Puntrenas in Costa Rica, guests board the Sea Hunter and set off for the 32-36 hour crossing to Cocos Island.
On arrival, the mother ship remains in the sheltered anchorages of either Wafer Bay on the north west coast or Chatham Bay in the north east, while the skiffs convey divers quickly to and from the dive sites.
For trips to Cocos Island you will need to fly to San Jose in Costa Rica. There are several flight options connecting via the States or Europe. For travel via the States a generous connection time should be allowed to clear security and customs. We recommend that you spend a night in San Jose either side of your Liveaboard trip – although it may be possible to fly back to the UK on the day you disembark. It is a 2½ hour bus transfer from San Jose to the sea port at Puntarenas where you will board Sea Hunter. It then takes approximately 32-36 hours to get to Cocos Island.
