Introduction to Vilamendhoo Island Resort

Vilamendhoo is a small, oval shaped island resort that lies between two channels in the southern part of Ari Atoll. It is 900m long and just 300m wide with a beautiful sandbank on the western side, a white sandy beach all around, and a turquoise-blue lagoon. This is an island for keen divers, it has an excellent house reef as well as superb dive sites nearby that can be accesssed by boat.

Accommodation

Accommodation is in 154 rooms laid out in detached and semi-detached bungalows, all close to the beach, except for the Standard Rooms, which are set in blocks in the interior.

Superior Rooms: The air-conditioned, tastefully furnished Superior Rooms are situated along the beachfront and each has a minibar, ceiling fan, double or twin beds and direct dial telephone. The ensuite bathroom is partially open-air in a private garden and offers shower with hot and cold desalinated water.

 

Deluxe Rooms: Situated along the beachline and totally detached are the 10 Deluxe Rooms. These are slightly larger than the Superior Rooms with a seperate sitting area and in the bathroom there is a bathtub as well as shower. In addition to the facilities offered in the Superior Rooms, the Deluxe Rooms have a satellite TV, tea & coffee making facilities, and a hairdryer.

Restaurants & Bars

There is one main restaurant and two bars on the island. The Main Restaurant offers superb local and international cuisine served buffet style for breakfast, lunch and evening dinner. Throughout the week theme nights and special meals are organised, which include a Maldivian Evening and BBQs organised on the beach. The main restaurant leads into a coffee shop which serves light snacks throughout the day and into the night.

Close to the restaurant is the Main Bar, which has a relaxed and informal atmosphere. A wide selection of wines and champagnes are available as well as spirits, liqueurs, beers, soft drinks and exotic cocktails. Next to the main bar is a television and games room where guests can relax and catch up on the world’s news or play table tennis. To the west of the island is the Beach Bar and a coffee shop. Once a week there is a disco in the beach bar and various entertainments are organised including a local “Bodu Beru” evening. Both bars on the island open at 10:00am and stay open until the last guest leaves.

Excursions & Entertainment

South Ari Atoll has many wonderful uninhabited and resort islands within easy reach of Vilamendhoo. Excursions available include visits to resorts and local fisherman's islands, as well as trips to uninhabited islands for picnics and snorkelling. Sunset Cruises are also available and big game fishing trips.

Land Sports include a floodlit astroturf tennis court, badminton, table tennis and table soccer and volley ball. The island also has a small but well-equipped air conditioned gym. On the beach there is an excellent water sports centre offering catamaran sailing and windsurfing and instruction is available.

Diving

The dive centre on Vilamendhoo is run by the excellent Euro-Divers and there are some fantastic dive sites nearby as well as the resort's superb house reef. The PADI 5-Star centre employs highly qualified multi-lingualstaff and a full range of dive courses are offered, from beginner to assistant instructor. Nitrox is offered free of charge to certified divers.

 

Travel Information

If you are travelling through or from the UK we can arrange flights on either award winning Emirates Airlines or Sri Lankan Airlines at very competitive fares. Emirates have a flexible schedule of departures on most days of the week from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle and Glasgow via Dubai. Sri Lankan airlines offer direct flights from Heathrow on certain days of the week and flights via Colombo at other times. If you would like to arrange your own flights, we can quote you a rate for your island accommodation that excludes flights.
