Maradhoo Island lies on the western side of Seenu Atoll, also known as Addu Atoll, which stretches south across the equator, with the island of Gan at its southernmost tip.  The area is famous for wreck diving but also for the abundance of sharks, manta rays and turtles.

During World War II the Royal Navy had a base and anchorage off the island of Gan and after the war the island was deserted for many years. However, the area has recently been developed and the wartime airstrip has been re-opened as Gan International Airport. Surrounded by large islands, most of them uninhabited, the atoll forms a natural harbour with calm water and protection from storms and high waves of the Indian Ocean. Consequently this area is home to a wide variety of marine species and briliant coral formations. The calm waters make this an ideal experience for photographers and novice divers while for the more experienced, the wrecks and drift dives provide exciting and rewarding diving.

The Aquaventure dive centre is on the island of Maradhoo,  in the southwestern chain of islands of the atoll and is linked to the resort of Feydhoo and the international airport on Gan by causeways.  The Stellar Maradhoo is the only guesthouse on the island, just a short walk from the dive centre and also only ten minutes by car from Gan International airport.

Excursions & Entertainment

This is a divers' location, far away from the tourist resorts.  Swimming, snorkelling and, of course, diving are a delight in this sheltered atoll.

Diving

Aquaventures offer a full range of courses from Beginner to Advanced Open Water and Speciality courses, including a PADI Drift Diver course.

Inside the atoll the currents are gentle, making it suitable for divers of all levels of competence and excellent for photographers. Sharks, manta rays and turtles are frequent visitors all the year around and the coral reefs are home to many different species of reef fish. The corals here were spared the bleaching that occurred in some areas of the Indian Ocean in 1998, so the underwater environment is full of stunning colours.

On the outer rims of the northern islands, currents are stronger and there are often large swells. Some spectacular drift and wall diving can be experienced here, with visits from mantas, reef sharks, Napolean wrasse and many other large pelagics. In the shallower waters, feather tailed rays can sometimes be seen basking on the sandy bottom, while everywhere abounds with many different kinds of coral.

There are twelve of these really thrilling dive sites on the north western perimeter and another two on the north eastern edge. Transfer from the resort by boat to these northern areas is between 45 and 60 minutes.

A dive on the wartime wreck of British Loyalty is a must when visiting this area. Lying in a depth of 33 metres, just ten minutes boat ride from the resort, the ship is 134 metres long and home to turtles, a resident leaf fish and many different types of corals.  Groupers, snapper, sweet lips and jacks are usually milling in and out of the black and gorgonian corals and around the three remaining blades of the ship's enormous  propeller.
