Diving

The Dive Centre on Meeru is run by the professional Eurodivers Worldwide and is spacious and well equipped.

The island is surrounded by a beautiful large lagoon that is home to a great variety of reef fish and coral formations, making it perfect for snorkellers and diver training.

With no accessible house reef all the dives sites are accessed by boat, and with over fifty dive sites in the area, you will not dive the same site twice! Sharks and manta rays cruise these waters throughout the year.

From May to December mantas are seen at Fairy Tale and Lankan Manta Point, while from December to April they congregate around Bodu Hithi Thila. Between May and December the predominant current flows out of the atoll and manta rays are attracted to the reef flat above the dive site Fairy Tale. Sometimes you can spend a whole dive at 5 metres watching these majestic giants stay at one cleaning station.

Even during the rest of the year, Fairy Tale is a diver’s dream spot. You could start the dive in a cloud of fusiliers and explore the two huge caverns covered with soft corals, nudibranches, flatworms, blennies and gobies. The chances of seeing mantas at Lankan Manta Point during the south-west monsoon are excellent. Large quantities of fish such as tuna, mackerel and trevally, whitetip reef sharks, eagle rays and hawksbill turtles also frequent the reef.

Bodu Hithi Thila is located on the western side of the atoll and between the months of December and April, when the currents shift the atoll plankton to the outlying water, manta rays come in from the high seas to feed. Turtles, napoleon wrasse, whitetip reef sharks, eagle rays and schooling barracuda can also be seen. A whaleshark could even make a rare appearance, however the main attraction during the northeast monsoon are the groups of ever graceful mantas that hover over cleaning stations or glide by with their mouths wide open whilst leisurely feasting on the nutrient-rich water.

Dive trips to these sites are offered as full day or two tank dive excursions.
