Built in Norway as an Antarctic whaler, SS Thorfinn is a 58 metre steam ship accommodating 22 passengers in 11 double, air conditioned cabins.
This vessel offers unique flexibility in diving the wrecks of Truk Lagoon because she operates with five tenders. This enables frequent and variable dive sites to be visited by separate small dive groups which means you can choose which wreck you would like to dive.
SS Thorfinn is very well set up for technical diving with on board oxygen generators and partial pressure filling enabling the delivery of various mixes of Enriched Air Nitrox to suit individual requests. Helium for Trimix blends is also available. There is a very experienced technically trained dive team to offer full surface support.
This is wreck diving at its most exciting, with a trip on the Thorfinn allowing you to dive up to five times a day and explore over thirty wrecks within a one week schedule.
There are 11 double cabins accommodating 22 guests. Eight of the cabins have double beds with an extra single bunk and private bathrooms and are on either the Main or Lower deck. Three additional double cabins are on the Lounge deck and have access to two shared showers and WCs. All cabins have air conditioning, washbasins and TV and DVD players.
On the Main deck there is a spacious dining room where friendly staff serve breakfast cooked to order and other meals à la carte. On the deck above there is a large guest saloon with a multi system plasma TV and DVD, a CD player with iPod connection and surround sound. The bar here provides a range of beverages - coffee, tea and soft drinks are complimentary while alcohol and canned drinks are available at reasonable prices.
The dive deck is located on the Main deck, with individual dive stations on the bow and port and starboard along the side decks. Large rinse tubs for equipment and adjacent fresh towels are provided.
It is Thorfinn`s well designed launches that ensure comfortable diving with a fast and quiet ride to the dive sites. These vessels are very well equipped with fresh water showers, under seat gear bins and camera shelves. In addition, after each dive, guests are handed fresh towels and cool water to drink.
On the main vessel, facilities for photographers are excellent with two large camera service and storage tables, located near to the main saloon. Each table has 110 and 220v charging points and there is a compressed air gun for cleaning and maintenance of your photographic equipment. In addition, each of the larger dive launches has custom built camera tables and rinse areas. Of course, the dive staff are experienced at handling all types of photograph equipment with great care and attention.
Rebreather and technical diving are well supported; Sofnalime and Sodasorb for rebreather scrubbers are supplied in a range of grades. A selection of rebreather cylinders and banded twin cylinders with isolated manifolds are available for rental. A selection of PADI courses and certification, including Nitrox, can be completed whilst on board.
Guests are able to make five days a day on Thorfinn, with launches departing regularly from 8am to 5pm and a night dive after dinner around 8.30pm. All diving takes place from the launches, which are moored or anchored to the wreck sites and divers descend and ascend on shot lines.
Thorfinn operates Saturday to Saturday but there is an element of flexibility, particularly if you wish to book a group.
